USM, Münsingen (CH)
Flow storage for 330 palletsThe former metal construction and metalworking company ‘Ulrich Schärer Münsingen’ has long since become a quality brand for (office) furniture with a worldwide reputation. In contrast to the timeless design of the furniture, USM's storage technology requires modernisation from time to time.

Initial situation
Outdated pallet systemUSM's live storage system was getting on in years and no longer corresponded to the current state of the art. A remodelling of the production hall required a different arrangement of the warehouse. A new solution with greater efficiency, maximum reliability and safety was required.
Solution
Modern live storageFWe realised a solution for USM with a semi-automated live storage system. The warehouse offers space for 330 pallets, spread over 3 levels, 5 bays and 10 aisles. The centrepiece is a small, automatic stacker crane and retrieval machine that transfers the pallets to the storage channels. To store a pallet, the operator simply selects the required storage channel via the display at the loading station. The pallet is transferred to the storage and retrieval unit via a roller conveyor and storage takes place automatically. For process reliability, the pallet height and the current fill level of the selected storage channel are checked at the loading station.
Pallets are removed manually on the opposite side of the warehouse. The following pallets automatically slide down the sloping gravity roller conveyors, freeing up space on the feed side. The new solution is integrated into the current production process and could be expanded if required.
Benefits
Efficient and economicalThe integration of the system into the production process results in an efficient flow of goods. The deliberate choice of the degree of automation made it possible to realise an economical solution.
