University Hospital Basel
Logistics is the pulseThe University Hospital of Basel (USB) is one of five university hospitals in Switzerland and the largest healthcare center in northwestern Switzerland. More than 8,000 employees treat approximately 42,000 inpatients each year. Together with the University of Basel and other partners, the USB is a leader in university research and innovation.
Logistics solution
It all began over 20 years ago. Since then, we have carried out numerous renovations, custom solutions, and upgrades. Approximately 5 km of conveyor systems connect the various buildings and stations. Gilgen Logistics’ highly reliable systems are like the veins of the USB and, like a steady pulse, keep patient care running smoothly.
Transport is carried out using vertical conveyors such as small-goods elevators and carousels (paternoster) as well as horizontal conveyor systems. The spontaneous transport system (transport of goods up to 50 kg for mail, medical records, pharmacy supplies, laundry, and laboratory services) was expanded and underwent a retrofit control modernization. This now enables complete container tracking via RFID transponders. Much of the mecom® container conveyor technology is mounted on the ceiling.
Meals, pharmaceutical products, provisions, laundry, and waste are transported in roll containers to ensure gentle handling. Horizontal transport is handled via roller conveyors, turntables, and transfer units, while vertical transport is managed via elevators. AGV vehicles ensure careful, fast, and safe transport.

A Gilgen service team is always on site and, through regular maintenance carried out in collaboration with the USB maintenance team, ensures the system’s availability throughout the year.
Gilgen Logistics is more than just a supplier. We have been working together as partners for decades.
